Santità.
È con gioia ed emozione che ci rivolgiamo a Vostra Santità per esprimere il grazie più profondo per averci dato la possibilità di incontrarLa all’apertura del V Halki Summit, organizzato dal Patriarcato Ecumenico di Costantinopoli in collaborazione con l’Istituto Universitario Sophia, e avente come oggetto di studio «Sustaining the Future of the Planet Together. The Prophetic Ministry of Pope Francis and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew».
Ricordiamo ancora con gratitudine l’udienza che Vostra Santità con il Santo Sinodo ha concesso alla delegazione dell’Istituto Universitario Sophia guidata dal mio amato predecessore Prof. Mons. Piero Coda, nell’ambito Cattedra Patriarca Atenagoras-Chiara Lubich, avvenuta al Fanar, nel gennaio del 2019. Furono, Santità, «momenti ricchi della Sua calda accoglienza, delle Sue parole di incoraggiamento, dell’Amore-agape che lo Spirito ha posto nel Suo cuore e che Lei, paternamente, ha abbondantemente riversato nei nostri»[1]. Tale amore ha immaginato l’evento che oggi si apre e che – dopo due anni di Pandemia – ci ha portati nuovamente al Fanar, facendoci cantare con il salmista «Ecco, quanto è buono e quanto è soave che i fratelli vivano insieme» (Sal. 132).
In questi tempi di tribolazione, nei quali la guerra in Ucraina fa riecheggiare le grida di dolore provenienti da tutte le guerre che da decenni si perpetrano senza sosta in tutto il mondo e, in diverso modo, nei cuori smarriti degli uomini e delle donne di oggi, una Luce rischiara le tenebre, un annunzio di speranza si ode: ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ ΑΝΕΣΤΗ! Cristo è Risorto!
È in Lui che poniamo la fede, la speranza, la carità e dal Padre, secondo la Sua preghiera che troviamo nel capitolo 17 del Vangelo di Giovanni «che tutti siano uno», desideriamo ricevere il dono dell’unità nella quale intendiamo vivere queste giornate di studio e tutta la nostra vita, per essere e offrire – in comunione – un contributo al “sostegno del futuro del Pianeta”. Mercoledì 1 giugno scorso ho avuto la grazia di salutare il Santo Padre Papa Francesco al termine del Convegno organizzato dal Dicastero per la Cultura e l’Educazione sul Patto Educativo Globale. In quell’occasione ho avuto modo di dirgli che saremo venuti per questo evento e avremo incontrato Vostra Santità. Papa Francesco con gioia mi ha detto: «gli porti i miei saluti». Lo faccio umilmente e di tutto cuore, Santità, affidandomi alle Sue preghiere e rinnovando la gratitudine per l’amore con cui continuamente rivolge lo sguardo al nostro e Suo Istituto Universitario Sophia.

Your Holiness.
It is with joy and emotion that we address Your Holiness to express our deepest thanks for giving us the opportunity to meet you at the opening of the 5th Halki Summit, organised by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in cooperation with the Sophia University Institute, and having as its subject “Sustaining the Future of the Planet Together. The Prophetic Ministry of Pope Francis and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew’.
We still remember with gratitude the audience that Your Holiness with the Holy Synod granted to the delegation of Sophia University Institute led by my beloved predecessor Prof. Archbishop Piero Coda, in the context of the Patriarch Atenagoras-Chiara Lubich Chair of Studies, which took place at the Phanar, in January 2019. They were, Your Holiness, “moments abounding in Your warm welcome, in Your words of encouragement, in the Love-agape that the Spirit placed in Your heart and which You, paternally, abundantly poured into ours” . Such love imagined the event that opens today and which – after two years of Pandemic – has brought us once again to the Phanar, causing us to sing with the psalmist “Behold, how good and how sweet it is for brothers to live together” (Ps. 132).
In these times of tribulation, in which the war in Ukraine echoes the cries of pain from all the wars that for decades have been perpetrated ceaselessly throughout the world and, in different ways, in the dismayed hearts of men and women today, a Light illuminates the darkness, an announcement of hope is heard: ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ ΑΝΕΣΤΗ! Christ is Risen!
It is in Him that we place our faith, our hope, our charity, and from the Father, according to His prayer that we find in chapter 17 of John’s Gospel “that all may be one”, we wish to receive the gift of unity in which we intend to live these study days and our whole life, to be and to offer – in communion – a contribution to “sustaining the future of the Planet”. Last Wednesday, 1 June, I had the grace of greeting the Holy Father Pope Francis at the end of the Conference organized by the Dicastery for Culture and Education on the Global Educational Pact. On that occasion I was able to tell him that we were coming for this event and that we would be meeting Your Holiness. Pope Francis joyfully said to me: “give him my greetings”. I do so humbly and wholeheartedly, Your Holiness, entrusting myself to your prayers and renewing my gratitude for the love with which you continually look upon our and your Sophia University Institute.
